tornado land

When we moved to Omaha I did not know that we had moved to tornado land, as I now call it. We have had to spend many nights in our basement. I am so thankful that we had it finished before we moved in. I cannot imagine going to the basement, with the kids, only to sit on cement floors and stare at each other. But it is still not a fun experience. There is a loud alarm that goes off in the community if we need to head for the basement. One night it went off at 2:30 in the morning. We flipped on the TV right away and the tornado had already passed us, and torn apart some homes and businesses less than a mile from our home. They did not know the storm was coming, so they did not pre-warn us, the alarm went off 7 minutes after the tornado touched down.
But the closest experience for us was the Little Sioux tragedy. I could not believe what happened when we were sitting in the basement watching the news. I had been camping in that exact campground four days before it happened, with our Stake Girls Camp. What a close call. I just felt awful for the boys that were there when it happened, and for their families that were sitting at home helpless. What a terrible tragedy.
Our kids are terrified of tornadoes, and so it is a constant topic of conversation in our home. Why do they happen? Where do they come from? Why did we move here? Can we move again?
It is definitely a little crazy around here. I don't think I like tornado land.

That is so crazy! I had no idea that nebraska was a tornado target. I hope you guys stay safe and that the tornado season ends soon.

ugh, tornados. I'm so sorry! I figured you guys were close to the big ones we'd heard about here, I've never actually heard a tornado siren, but I know just a few miles east they've heard them.
And the turtle story! Didn't you know the difference? WEll, now you do, I can't believe Mike made you pick it up...dork.
